On Copying Secular Media and Marketing for Ministry Use in Production

Posted by John Saddington on Jun 2, 2010

Take a look at this commercial from CareerBuilder:

I definitely LOL’d when I first saw this.

Now take at a look at this remake in the context of ministry by North Point Ministries for their College Ministry…

Thoughts?

This post is neither a critique nor an endorsement but rather an observation of what I’ve seen a number of ministries do.

  1. I think it is brilliant and well played.
    Makes me want to go.

I think this kind of things builds a point of connection between the familiar and the not-so-familiar. And it’s not just church copying mainstream where we see this sort of thing either.

Good choice on wardrobe in the 2nd video. Heyward > *

  4. Well, like I always say, if you can’t beat it, steal it.

  5. If it’s funny and helps get the point across, why not? Just think of Wierd Al.

  6. Niceness!

  7. decent remake.

coming from a small team, sometimes all you can do is mimic what’s already out there. I agree with herbhalstead that it helps bridge the gap between familiar and non-familiar. However, if you have the resources and the talent, you also need to be coming up with original stuff.

  8. There’s lots of tools and we can’t be completely original all the time (any of the time?) anyway. However, if that’s the only thing you do, maybe you should step out and try to be more creative. Christians should be driving creativity not just always copycatting…it would be cool if secular companies/organizations started copying Christian creativity…it happens, but rarely.
