Inspiration: Byzantine Architecture

Posted by Ben Townsend on Jul 10, 2010

Continuing some of my architecture-type inspiration posts, check out these pieces to be inspired from the Roman Empire.

The first ‘h’ is silent and the ‘g’ is pronounced like a German/Scottish ‘ch.’  Originally an Orthodox cathedral, and converted to a mosque after the Ottoman conquest in 1453, t’s been an Istanbul/Constantinople landmark for over 1500 years. One of the most well-known and recognizable examples of Byzantine architecture.

St. Mark’s is one of Venice’s most popular tourist spots, as well as the seat of its archdiocese. It features some of the best-preserved examples of Byzantine mosaics.

Greek monastery built in the 9th century; good example of varied geometry and eastern stylistic influences characteristic of Byzantine design.
